The Beauty of Black and White Photography
It seems like with digital photography on the rise and the advent of full-color images available to everyone, there’s no longer any need for black and white photography, but you might be surprised – this classic style of photo isn’t ready to die yet, and it’s still just as striking and alluring as ever. Full-color photos are beautiful no doubt, but black and white images show perfectly the contrast of light and shadow, they frame the subject in a very straightforward way, and some of the most famous photographers in history worked mainly in black and white photography, from Ansel Adams’ evocative and mysterious nature photos to Robert Mappelthorpe’s fun, bold and daring photos of punk rock queen Patti Smith. They Laughed When I Pulled Out My Prism – But Then They All Wanted One!
I love nature photography, going out into the world and capturing the earth’s beauty with the lens of my camera, and there’s nothing like a photo shoot in the woods to give you a sense of creative imagination. It was just recently that I found myself with a group of good friends, hiking on a local nature trail in the Midwest, a crisp chill in the air and the sunshine on our faces, when a wild deer with a huge set of antlers rushed out onto the path, giving us the perfect opportunity for snapping some pictures. It was a rare, beautiful moment – surrounded by camera lenses glittering like eyes, the animal stayed perfectly still and patiently began to graze on the grass under its feet. We’d never been so close to a deer in its natural habitat before.
